MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday dismissed speculations that the postponement of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte was influenced by discussions surrounding a potential leadership shake-up in the Senate.
Escudero recently moved the presentation of the Articles of Impeachment from June 2 to June 11, citing the need to prioritize key legislative measures before the 19th Congress adjourns sine die on June 14.
“This has nothing to do with the Senate leadership,” Escudero said in a press briefing. “I don’t see any connection whatsoever, especially considering that the 20th Congress will have an entirely different composition.”
Despite denying any link between the schedule change and the reported contest for Senate presidency, Escudero confirmed that conversations about leadership transitions are ongoing among senators. This comes after Senators Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go revealed that Escudero had reached out to their group — known as the Duterte bloc — regarding the Senate’s top post.
Dela Rosa said the Duterte bloc, composed of Senators Go, Robin Padilla, Imee Marcos, and senator-elect Rodante Marcoleta, had been approached by Escudero amid rumors of a looming Senate shake-up. Senator Go also confirmed that Escudero and senator-elect Vicente “Tito” Sotto III are both seeking the bloc’s support for the Senate presidency in the 20th Congress.
When asked whether he is already courting support from his peers, Escudero said: “We’re talking — they’re all my friends. We’re discussing work not just for the 19th but also for the 20th Congress.”
However, he stressed that it was still premature to make any commitments. “In my view, it’s still too early. Whatever the answer is today might change by next week or next month. So, all the discussions and preparations now feel a bit premature,” he added.
